Arthritis Care

Arthritis is a common condition that is often associated with aging, but arthritis can also develop with orthopedic trauma and certain autoimmune and inflammatory diseases (rheumatoid arthritis).

The classic sign of arthritis is aching joints that may swell or become very stiff, resulting from the loss of cartilage in your joint. Walking and moving the affected joint can become very painful, and, in severe situations, can become too painful to bear.

The surgeons at Orthopedic Associates of Northern Berkshire can recommend a variety of ways to deal with arthritis pain, including surgical and non-surgical treatment. A combination of prescription anti-inflammatories and pain medicine can help.

We also perform injections of Orthovisc® for knee arthritis, a medication that replaces natural joint fluid to cushion, protect, and lubricate your knee. It can provide pain relief for up to 6 months. It is injected directly into the joint for fast relief.

When these treatments no longer provide sufficient pain relief, you may want to consider a joint replacement procedure.

If you are concerned about arthritis and have never been to an orthopedic doctor, then you should give us a call. An orthopedic physician is better qualified to treat arthritis than any other type of doctor, because arthritis affects the musculoskeletal system. Diagnosing arthritis is typically done with an X-ray and bone density scan.

Our orthopedic physicians stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in arthritis care, and most procedures for arthritis pain relief are done in the office.
